Dad, where were you December 7th?

"You mean December 7th 1941?
I was with your mother.
It was a Sunday and we left the church and we were going to the Colonial Cafeteria …
About five blocks from Lake Merritt
We were with your grandparents, Carl and Marie (my Uncle and Aunt) and the Nystroms."

How did you find out?

"We were walking and at 14th and Broadway the newspaper boys were shouting
'Extra extra. Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor' "

We still went to lunch ...
Then we went home and listened to the radio

Mom was only 17 years old …
Dad was 21

Note:  WWII Veterans are dying at the rate of more than 1,000/day

We need to ask the questions today
Thanks, Dad

I am not sure why you wrote this or what you are looking for but I did quite a bit of research for a widow of a WW II pilot after he died of brain cancer. As a pilot he was told that this nasal spray that he was told to put in his nose was to help him with the altitudes. It was only much later that it was discovered that this was radioactive and an experiment to see what would happen to these men when they were exposed to the radioactivity. He was a human guinea pig

I'm spending time with the folks this weekend .. and want to better understand their life ... We had talked a bit about the war in the past ... but it has been a while so started the conversation with the question "dad, where were you December 7th?"

Hi Debbie,
Please consider yourself as one of the luckiest to have both parents to question about the past.. We lost ours, too late to ask. Thanks for sharing my friend.. God bless you and your family.
Care,
